Kord vs PTC Windchill for engineering document review

Windchill manages CAD data, product structures, and change notices. Kord is the review layer for engineering document sets like P&IDs, datasheets, calc sets, and submittal packages.

Windchill is for manufactured products - rockets, medical devices, CNC machines - defined by CAD models, part structures, and the change notices that govern them. For those companies, Kord doesn’t replace it.

An infrastructure project isn’t an assembly. The FEED study for a plant or a terminal is a set of documents (P&IDs, equipment datasheets, interface definitions, plot plans) that don’t map onto a part structure, so Windchill files them as attachments. Creo View will overlay two drawings for you; it won’t review the package as one change, and the review ends up back in PDF and email regardless.

If your deliverable is the document set behind a $300 million project, Windchill was never the fit. Kord works with your engineers instead of against them.

Typical Windchill workflow for documents

  • Check in CAD and attach PDF exports to part revisions
  • Route ECN through Windchill approval gates
  • Reviewers open attachments without package-level diff
  • Spec sheets and calcs reviewed outside PLM in email or Bluebeam
  • Document-set consistency is tribal knowledge

Kord workflow

  • Edit files. Kord syncs and versions them automatically
  • See exactly what changed, with visual diffs across PDF, Excel, STEP, and more
  • AI cross-document consistency checks catch what humans miss
  • Group a single change across every document it touches - excel, word, pdf, etc.
  • Ship with full traceability, including a release snapshot and audit trail

Frequently asked questions

Is Kord a Windchill replacement?

No. Windchill should keep owning CAD and BOMs. Kord is the review layer for the document deliverables (P&IDs, calcs, submittals) PLM was never meant to review as a mixed-format package or iterate on at submittal speed.

We use Windchill with Arena. Where does Kord fit?

Between storage and both systems. Kord syncs the files from SharePoint or Drive, runs the visual review and consistency checks on the whole package, and the approved revisions feed back into your PLM and document control records.

Does Kord diff STEP files from Windchill exports?

Yes - STEP 3D diff sits right alongside the PDF, spreadsheet, and text deliverables in the same review session.
