Kord vs Arena PLM for engineering document review

PTC Arena is a PLM for regulated products and teams that track every bolt, washer, and gasket. Kord is the review layer for engineering teams working FEED studies and organizing transmittals.

Arena is built for companies that manufacture regulated products, the medical devices and electronics that live and die by a controlled BOM. For that, it’s the right tool. It just wasn’t drawn up for a $300 million plant.

When you’re doing the FEED for one, your deliverables are spec sheets, vendor packages, P&IDs, and plot plans, not a bill of materials with every bolt, washer, and gasket under change control. That set belongs in Kord.

An engineer should be able to see exactly how the pump operating point moved between two issues in a few seconds, without opening an ECO or booking time with a document controller. That’s the part Kord does.

Typical Arena workflow

  • Open an ECN for the design change
  • Attach revised controlled documents
  • Route for sequential approvals
  • Reviewers rely on revision letters, not visual diffs
  • Release, though related calculations may still be out of sync

Kord workflow

  • Edit files. Kord syncs and versions them automatically
  • See exactly what changed, with visual diffs across PDF, Excel, STEP, and more
  • AI cross-document consistency checks catch what humans miss
  • Group a single change across every document it touches - excel, word, pdf, etc.
  • Ship with full traceability, including a release snapshot and audit trail

Frequently asked questions

Is Kord an Arena replacement?

Not for quality-system document control - keep Arena for that. Kord is the review layer for the engineering deliverables (P&IDs, calcs, submittals) where you need to see what changed on the page, not just that a revision letter ticked over.

Can we use Kord and Arena together?

Yes. Plenty of teams keep Arena as the PLM/QMS for controlled records and quality workflows and use Kord for the engineering review: sync the files, diff the changes, run the consistency checks, approve the package, then update the controlled record in Arena.

Does Kord support audit trails for regulated teams?

Kord gives you release snapshots, approver sign-offs, and a full history of what was reviewed and published for each submittal revision, built for engineering audit needs alongside your QMS. It isn't a validated 21 CFR Part 11 system of record, though, so keep Arena as the controlled QMS and run Kord as the visual review layer in front of it.
